Natural Language Processing Department

Our academics working in the field of natural language processing (NLP) focus on system development, which allows computers to communicate with people using everyday language. They investigate the development of systems that convert information from the computer's database into readable or audible human language and vice versa.

These systems also enable sophisticated tasks such as inter-language translation, semantic understanding, text summarization, and holding a dialog. Some of the core applications of NLP algorithms include interactive voice response applications, automated translators, digital personal assistants (for example Siri, Cortana, Alexa), chatbots, and smart word processors.

The university offers Ph.D. and master's in NLP with exceptionally advanced courses and outcomes.

Chair's message

Natural language processing (NLP) is a critical branch of AI that makes it possible for humans to communicate naturalistically with machines via language, and for machines to interpret, translate, and generate human language. Advancements in NLP will reshape how we all live and work together, enabling businesses and organizations to analyze and glean insights from textual data at scales that are vastly beyond human capacity.

At MBZUAI's NLP department, we are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with NLP. At the core of our work is a deep commitment to developing NLP datasets and methods to help solve critical social problems and achieve efficiency and productivity gains across business and government.

… we are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with NLP.

Projects

This project focuses on building an Arabic language model to be utilized in Arabic natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as sentiment analysis, named-entity recognition, and question answering. The Arabic language model will also be used at the different stages of Arabic speech recognition. The research is taken further to support unsupervised, self-training for using parallel processing.
